It’s Fall, Y’all!

Fall Plumbing Maintenance Tips

It’s fall in Texas y’all! Although freezing weather is not a high probability, it is still a possibility. After all it is Texas! Cool fall temperatures are a reminder that when winter arrives, it can be unexpected, often leaving homeowners unprepared for the issues that relate to extreme cold temperatures. Homeowners can prevent headaches and potential costly repairs throughout the winter months by preparing now.

• Check your outside faucets and make sure that they are not running or leaking. If they are, please make sure that repairs are made before freezing temperatures arrive. When pipes freeze, the pressure builds up causing them to crack and break.

• Disconnect all outside hoses. If there are connected to the outside faucet, any water inside of the hoses will freeze and expand to the faucet causing interior pipes to break.

• Water heaters work more in the colder months. Flushing the water heater removes any sediment buildup, which causes corrosion and shortens the lifespan of your water heater.

• The temperature setting on your water heater’s thermostat should be set at 120°F for optimal performance.

• Leaves and debris should be cleared from gutters and downspouts to allow for easy water drainage when ice thaws after a freeze throughout winter.

• If you plan to leave home for an extended period, shut off the main water valve and drain the system by opening faucets at the highest and lowest points of the house.
